Doctor Who

Today was shit so I’m gonna gush about my favorite show of all time: Doctor Who. If you don’t know what Doctor Who is, one, I implore you to watch it, I have it on Plex and it will definitely be worth your time. Two, here’s a quick refresher from google:

`Doctor Who’ is a classic science-fiction programme with a cult following. The Doctor is called a `Time Lord’, a time-travelling scientist from a far off planet, who travels through time and space in a shop known by the acronym TARDIS. A TARDIS is a machine that is larger on the inside than the outside and is supposed to change its appearance based on its surroundings. The Doctor is also able to evolve his biology, so he appears as many different people throughout the series. The Doctor loves Earth, so he makes many trips here to save the planet, or to enlist earthlings to help him with tasks in the galaxy.

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD SO PLEASE WATCH FIRST

The obvious place to start when discussing Doctor Who with someone is who your favorite Doctor is. A note before I go into this, I have only watched the reboot/new seasons, so any of the Doctors before Christopher Eccleston, AKA the Ninth Doctor, are unknown to me and therefore not included in this discussion. Because there is not a single one I dislike, I will be starting chronologically with the Ninth Doctor.

The Ninth Doctor, AKA Christopher Eccleston

The ground beneath our feet is spinning at 1,000 miles an hour, and the entire planet is hurtling around the sun at 67,000 miles an hour, and I can feel it. We’re falling through space, you and me, clinging to the skin of this tiny little world, and if we let go… [drops Rose’s hand] That’s who I am.

For me, this is the first Doctor, the one who entrapped me into this universe, the one who fully captured my attention and made me a fan for life. When we first meet him, the Doctor is portrayed as a wanderer, one who flits and dashes through time, only staying for a fleeting moment to save the day, and leaving just as abruptly as his arrival. Over the time we, the audience, spend with him, he slowly warms up and comes into himself as the Doctor, only for it all to be dashed away in the story arc that really sold me on this series: Bad Wolf.

While this arc only takes place in the last two episodes of the first season, it’s buildup is scattered throughout the preceding ten. In the leading episodes, we see the Doctor “come out of his shell,” as it were. I must leave this description at this, as each time I attempt to put this into words, I fail miserably. Such is fate though, that in the final arc, the Doctor meets his nemesis, the Daleks. An enemy so great, it brings out the worst traits in the Doctor’s personality. The side of him that granted “The Oncoming Storm” as a term of fear and even respect amongst his foes. I would be remiss not to bring up the Doctor’s other, more human half, Rose Tyler.

Rose Tyler, AKA Billie Piper

The Doctor: What have you done?!
Rose: I looked into the TARDIS. And the TARDIS looked into me.
The Doctor: You looked into the Time Vortex. Rose, no one’s meant to see that.
Rose: I am the Bad Wolf. I create myself. I take the words, I scatter them in time and space. A message to lead myself here.
The Doctor: Rose, you’ve got to stop this! You’ve got to stop this now! You’ve got the entire vortex running through your head. You’re gonna burn.
Rose: I want you safe. My Doctor. Protected from the false god.
Dalek Emperor: You can not hurt me. I am immortal.
Rose: You are tiny. I can see the whole of time and space. Every single atom of your existence. And I divide them. Everything must come to death. All things. Everything dies. The Time War ends.

One of the few constants of this show is the Doctor always has a companion. The Doctor’s companion is his moral compass, a lighthouse in an ever darkening night. While Rose is not my favorite companion, she certainly is not a detractor to the Ninth Doctor’s performance. In fact, Billie Piper does an exceptional job in her role of the Doctor’s companion. Without her, I don’t believe the show would have taken off as it did. Both Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper compliment the others roles so well that I must give Andy Pryor, the casting director, my everlasting thanks.

While the center piece of the show is the Doctor, his companions usually provide the sense of familiarity and humanity to keep the show grounded. I think Billie Piper did a fantastic job in this, especially in the Bad Wolf arc, a performance that left a mental bookmark in me and hasn’t fallen out since.

That’s it Folks

I’m not sure how often I’m going to write these, or even if my next post will touch on this at all. Anyway, this feels a bit stupid to write as I don’t think I will ever attempt to advertise this blog, but I’d love to hear your takes in the comments below. Peace my dudes
